Governor Marvin Mandel Resigns from University System of Maryland Board of Regents
ADELPHI, MD (February
4, 2009)-Governor Marvin Mandel has resigned from the University System of
Maryland Board of Regents, citing the need for more time to devote to his law
firm and consulting practice. His resignation was effective January 23, 2009. Mandel, who began his service
on the USM Board of Regents in July 2003,
said he made this decision with "deep regret."
"Governor Mandel is a true public servant in every sense,"
said USM Board of Regents Chairman Clifford
Kendall. "We appreciate his decades of service to the State of Maryland,
and more specifically, his outstanding work as a member of our board. He will
be missed."
Mandel was a very active member of the Board of Regents. He served
on the board's Committee on Education Policy, Committee on Finance, and
Effectiveness and Efficiency Work Group. For nine months, he chaired the board's
Campus Safety and Security Workgroup, which assessed and addressed emergency
preparedness issues faced by USM and its
institutions. The workgroup submitted its final report to the board in
September 2008.
"As a regent, Governor Mandel brought historical perspective,
practical approaches, and an unwavering dedication to advancing public higher
education opportunities and improving quality of life statewide," said USM
Chancellor William E. Kirwan. "We will miss his participation, but we know that
he will continue to be an advocate for the University System of Maryland and
for the students and the state that we serve."
The Board of Regents is the governing body of the University
System of Maryland. The board's 17 volunteer members are appointed by the
governor. Governor Martin O'Malley will appoint a member to the seat vacated by
Governor Mandel.
