Kirwan Appointed Chair of National Research Council's Higher Education and Workforce Board

 

ADELPHI, Md (March 24, 2009)-William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, has been appointed chair of the National Research Council Board on Higher Education and Workforce. The National Research Council is one of the four organizations comprising The National Academies, which brings together committees of science and technology experts to address critical national issues and offer advice to the federal government and the public.

As chair of the National Research Council Board on Higher Education and Workforce (BHEW), Kirwan is leading a group of industry, higher education, and federal government leaders focused primarily on three areas: the graduate education and careers of doctoral scientists and engineers, the education and labor market for the broader science and engineering workforce, and improving the participation of underrepresented groups in science and engineering. Kirwan's term as chair runs through the end of 2011.

Current BHEW projects include an assessment of research doctorate programs in the United States; assessing the workforce in veterinary medicine; and national needs for biomedical, behavioral, a d clinical research personnel. Other areas on the board's agenda are the health and competitiveness of the nation's research universities, measuring higher education productivity, and the energy workforce needs for the 21st century.
