USM to Hold Public Meeting on UMBI Organizational Review May 7
ADELPHI, Md. (April
28, 2009)-A special committee of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents invites individuals to sign
up to speak at a public meeting focused on the University of Maryland
Biotechnology Institute (UMBI). Speakers should address the mission and
organization of UMBI and options to enhance the institution's effectiveness. The
meeting is scheduled to begin at 2 pm
Thursday, May 7, in the USM Office
at 3300 Metzerott Road
in Adelphi.
Clifford Kendall, chair of the USM
Board of Regents, in March appointed the special committee to review UMBI's
mission and organization. Based on input from many sources-including the
individuals who speak at the May 7 meeting-the committee will develop
recommendations for maximizing the return on the state's investment in UMBI. Jennie Hunter-Cevera will step down from the
UMBI presidency June 30, offering this opportunity to study UMBI's current
mission as well as consider alternative organizational options.
Established in 1985, UMBI is one of USM's
13 institutions. UMBI scientists conduct groundbreaking research in key areas
of biotechnology, generate innovative solutions to practical problems, and
develop new technologies for commercial application. The institute has four
research centers, two in Baltimore
and one each in Rockville
and College Park.
