Adelphi, Md. (June 17,
2009) - The University System of Maryland (USM)
Board of Regents at its next meeting will vote on several new academic
proposals and act upon recommendations of a report of the Ad Hoc University of
Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) Review Committee.
The public session is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 19 in Room 201
of the Lane University Center
at Frostburg State University.
During this annual meeting of the board, USM
Chancellor William E. Kirwan will deliver his FY 2009 report.
The new
academic program proposals under consideration include the following:
- B.S. in
Urban Studies, Coppin State University;
-
Integrated B.S. in Biology/M.S. in Applied Biology, Salisbury University;
-
Professional Science Master's in Applied Physics, Towson University;
- B.S. in
Public Health Science, University of Maryland, College Park (to be offered solely

regional centers);

Education, UMCP (to be offered initially at the Universities at Shady Grove).
The report
from the UMBI Review Committee comes after its comprehensive study of the
mission and organization of the research institute. In February 2009, Clifford
Kendall, chairman of the USM Board
of Regents, appointed this special committee of regents to develop
recommendations to maximize the return on the state's investment in UMBI and
its component centers. The board is expected to discuss and take action on the
recommendations at the upcoming meeting.
Other
action items include the FY 2010 System Funded Construction Program Request and
the Towson University Dining Services Contract.
