USM Chancellor Appoints Search Committee for University of Maryland, Baltimore President
Adelphi, MD (July 7, 2009)-William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM), today announced his appointment of the search
committee for the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). UMB
is one of the university system's 13 institutions.
"As the state's only public
academic health, law, and human services university, the University of
Maryland, Baltimore plays a unique role in the state," said Chancellor Kirwan.
"Given that critical role, we are seeking a national leader who can build on
the university's excellence and momentum. We hope to complete the search
process within the next 10 months."
The chair of the search committee
is Rick Berndt, managing partner with Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP
in Baltimore and a former member of the USM
Board of Regents.

Francis X. Kelly, a member of the
USM Board of Regents and chairman/CEO
of Kelly & Associates Insurance Group, is the search committee's liaison to
the board. Katie Ryan, senior advisor to Chancellor Kirwan, is the committee's
liaison to the Office of the Chancellor.
UMB President David J. Ramsay
announced in early June that he will step down from his position effective upon
the regents appointing a successor. Ramsay has been president of UMB since
1994. "Clearly, the university and the state have benefitted from David's
visionary leadership during the past 15 years," Kirwan noted.
The university, located in
downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor, includes schools of dentistry, law,
medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work. It also includes
an interdisciplinary graduate school.
The campus is closely associated
with the University of Maryland Medical System, the university's affiliated
hospital system. As president of the university, Ramsay also sits on the board
of directors of the hospital system.
