USM Chancellor Appoints Search Committee for University of Maryland, Baltimore President

Adelphi, MD (July 7, 2009)-William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM), today announced his appointment of the search committee for the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). UMB is one of the university system's 13 institutions.

"As the state's only public academic health, law, and human services university, the University of Maryland, Baltimore plays a unique role in the state," said Chancellor Kirwan. "Given that critical role, we are seeking a national leader who can build on the university's excellence and momentum. We hope to complete the search process within the next 10 months."

The chair of the search committee is Rick Berndt, managing partner with Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP in Baltimore and a former member of the USM Board of Regents.

The other members of the search committee are:

UMB President David J. Ramsay announced in early June that he will step down from his position effective upon the regents appointing a successor. Ramsay has been president of UMB since 1994. "Clearly, the university and the state have benefitted from David's visionary leadership during the past 15 years," Kirwan noted.

The university, located in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor, includes schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work. It also includes an interdisciplinary graduate school.

The campus is closely associated with the University of Maryland Medical System, the university's affiliated hospital system. As president of the university, Ramsay also sits on the board of directors of the hospital system.
