For 6th-to-10th Graders on Maryland's Eastern Shore: A Jump on a Successful College Path
University System of
Maryland's Way2GoMaryland Campaign to Hold Event at Chesapeake College, Saturday,
December 5
Adelphi, Md. (Nov. 3, 2009)
- Way2GoMaryland, the University
System of Maryland's (USM) campaign
to encourage students and their families to begin preparing for college early,
will hold an informational event Saturday, December 5, for 6th-through-10th-graders
enrolled in schools and home-schooled on Maryland's Eastern Shore. A parent or
guardian is asked to accompany their child or children throughout the free event
at the Todd Performing Arts Center at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Md.
Check-in begins at 9 a.m.
The formal program, including a question-and-answer panel with USM students regarding
their own paths to college, will start at 10 a.m. Also joining the panel to
answer questions from the audience is an admissions expert from a USM university.
Immediately following the formal session, participants will move to
the Caroline College Center on the campus for a college fair featuring
admissions representatives from USM
universities, the financial aid office of the Maryland Higher Education
Commission, and the College Savings Plans of Maryland.
Attendees will be eligible to win door prizes and all will receive a
free lunch, available until roughly 12:30 p.m.
Way2GoMaryland is part of USM
Chancellor William E. Kirwan's Closing
the Achievement Gap Initiative, an aggressive effort to help ensure more
students are prepared for college and successful in completing their
undergraduate education. An early start on the path to college can help
students:
- pursue the right mix of
secondary school coursework and be successful;
- prepare for the college
search and application process;
- gain access to adequate
financial aid;
- complete undergraduate
degrees successfully and prepare to enter the workforce and/or pursue
graduate and professional studies.
ATK, a premier aerospace and defense company, is the campaign's lead
sponsor. ATK has committed $210,000
in financial and in-kind support for the campaign over three years.
Parents and guardians are asked to pre-register their child or
