Langenberg Legacy Fellowship

The USM Langenberg Legacy Program promotes civic engagement by supporting student-led, campus initiatives that address challenges in the community. Named in honor of former USM Chancellor Donald N. Langenberg, each year this program recognizes a cohort of student Fellows from across the University System and provides them with resources to help them advance their civic engagement projects.

Langenberg Fellows

Providing a Community of Support to Civic-Minded Student Leaders

Each year, the USM selects a cohort of Langenberg Legacy Fellows who are nominated by their universities for their leadership of civic engagement projects on campus. Over the course of the fellowship, students will gather with their cohort to share best practices and build a community of civic leaders. Fellows and their faculty sponsors receive a stipend to support their work.

Leading Campus Initiatives with Community Impact

The Langenberg Legacy Fellows are engaged in year-long, action-oriented projects that seek solutions to broader community issues, such as education equity, environmental justice, gun violence, health care access, and voter turnout. The USM publishes the fellows' final project reports at the end of each cohort year.

Nomination Process and Schedule

Nominations to the Langenberg Legacy Program are coordinated by each university's Provosts or Vice Presidents of Student Affairs and submitted between November and March each year. Langenberg Legacy Fellows are typically announced by the USM in April or May. For additional information on the fellowships, please contact Antonia Johnson, ajohnson@usmd.edu, Executive Administrative Assistant.

Origins and History

The Langenberg Legacy Fellowship honors Dr. Donald N. Langenberg, who served as the Chancellor of the University System of Maryland from 1990 until 2002. In addition to being a university leader, he was a prolific scholar in the field of physics. As a leader of USM, he focused on the expansion of STEM education in grade school, as well as in civic engagement and education.

The Langenberg Legacy Fellowship evolved out of the Langenberg Lecture and Award program, which was originally established through an endowed USM Foundation fund in honor of Chancellor Langenberg on his retirement in 2002.
